I'm starting a new political canvass for the Pittsburgh area. I'm going to be a little bit more honest than either the Clean Water Action Project or Working America--not meant as a slight as both are fine organizations--and tell you that canvassing involves door knocking, usually from 4 pm to 9 pm. This is tough demanding work that, simply put, isn't for everybody.
Here are the traits for people that I've seen who have done well in my 30 years of being a field canvasser,watching other canvassers and running a canvass for three years.
1.) People who have a great track record in sales. If you can sell ice in the winter then you can canvass well.
2.) You're a political junkie, on the liberal side. You think and breathe politics. You know who your state and federal reps are, your state and federal senators are, and you have complaints about all of them. You're a member of the Daily Kos, MoveOn, Firedoglake and probably several other communities. You're passionate enough about politics to talk about them for five hours at a time.
3.)You're in good shape. Fit people can hit more doors and usually give better raps even after walking up a flight of stairs.
4.) You're an experienced canvasser. I promise to treat you better than those awful summer canvasses that come into town. You'll have to miss weekly quota to be in trouble, not three days in a row. I'm setting daily quota at 90 dollars.
I have seen successful canvassers, people who have kept their jobs for more than three months, who only met one of those criteria. In other words fat right wing people with sales skills can canvass for a living. But nobody likes them...
You will also not get rich canvassing. Field canvassers are lucky to make 10 to 12 thousand a year. Field managers could make between 12 to 15 thousand a year. Canvass directors could make up to 18 thousand or more if they willing to canvass several days a week. All those numbers go up if the canvass is successful.
I need field canvassers, field managers and canvass directors. It helps if you have a vehicle we can use. I will pay for gas, something else that we can canvass on, unfortunately.
We will be working on some exciting issues because, unfortunately, there's an assault on the middle class and the president I voted for is a terrible negotiator. This means you can actually canvass to prevent social security and medicaid cuts at the federal level, preventing draconian school cuts at the state level and preventing the gutting of the Port Authority locally.
So, if I haven't scared you off, you can start canvassing next week. Email me a resume and I'll set up an interview. There is growth potential. We need canvasses everywhere throughout Pennsylvania. I don't think anyone is doing a canvass on these economic issues. And here's the deal: We have a lot of problems in this country and the answers won't be easy. This could be the start of some solutions.
